If the recent “Weiner-gate” episode taught us nothing else, it certainly highlighted some very timely lessons of life in the 21st century:
Rule #1 – Pictures of your nether-regions WILL surface if you are foolish enough to utilize Social Media to share said pictures. To borrow from Rick Blaine “you’ll regret it. Maybe not today. Maybe not tomorrow. But soon and for the rest of your life.” It must be an irresistible urge, as notable celebrities, politicians, and athletes have fallen before the honorable Mr. Weiner, but post his privates he must.
Rule #2 – We expect people to fall from Grace; what really ticks us off is when they won’t admit it! Not the action itself, not the collateral damage, it’s the lies ~ Edwards and “the Arnold” set the most recent examples; if you ‘fess up, the public seems capable of forgiving any indiscretion. Only when treated as mindless sheep do we seem to respond without empathy.
Rule #3 The more things change, the more they stay the same. The downfall of “great” men can almost unfailingly be traced to an inability to keep their trousers intact. The song of the siren continues to lure these foolish Captains into the jagged rocks, even as they see the wreckage and carnage from those who preceded them into folly.
Indeed, at one point I had an idea that seemed quite funny at first – I’d take a scandal, any scandal, involving a powerful man & trace the indiscretion to its inevitable source. Turns out it’s not as much funny as it is sad; they should give men an owner’s guide before allowing us to pass thru puberty ~ for our own protection.
